Eating snails is not an exclusively Gallic phenomenon, as some 12,000 inhabitants of the Catalonian town of Lleida prove. Every May local citizens are joined by snail enthusiasts for the Snail Festival (Aplec del Caragol) in the Camps Elisis gardens.
This event has taken place for more than 25 years, after being founded by local gastronome Manolo Calpe in 1979. Today some 12 tonnes of this exotic mollusc are savoured (along with some favourite Lleidan sauces) over the three days of the fiesta.
There is plenty of eating, drinking and dancing on offer, and make sure to don your most colourful garb - after all, it's not every day that you get to go to a snail feast. Many of the peƱas (groups/gatherings) are private and so it's best to hook up with some locals to guarantee an invitation. If you're unlucky, numerous restaurants offer typical snail dishes.
