During this vibrant three-week festival, visitors can experience the colour and excitement of a traditional Mexican fair. This is the quintessential Mexican experience, and features mariachi bands, handicraft markets, bullfights, folk dancing, games, cockfights, fireworks and many other cultural events. It is also a great opportunity to sample the local cuisine so expect plenty of chillies and spices, you can also wash it all down with a shot or two of tequila. A National Poetry Prize and a traditional dress competition also take place during this popular fair. Originally a livestock fair that was first held in 1828, the San Marcos National Fair is one of Mexico’s best-loved festivals that now attracts over 250,000 visitors each year.
