The first ever Shadow Art Fair, held July 15th, 2006 at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, was a resounding success. We got so much overwhelmingly positive feedback from the over 1,000 people in attendance and the artists involved that we decided to make another one happen before another year went by. Winter Shadow 2006 was December 1 and 2, and went completely awesomely. We maxed out the building's capacity that Friday night...Next up was Summer Shadow 2007, a one day, 12-hour event with a solid turnout and musical acts playing in the beer garden.
Next up: Winter Shadow 2007! December 1, noon to midnight.
Like the Summer Shadow 2007, the vendor area will be expanding into the other side of the brewery. This will make it less crowded and allow us to invite new artists.
The Michigan Design Militia started as a group of artists who consigned at the Ypsi/Ann Arbor shop Henrietta Fahrenheit. When HF closed its brick-and-mortar location, we decided to get together to meet each other and see if we could help each other and the local community of independent artists by sharing our resources and experiences. At some point in our meetings, the plan was hatched for a Shadow Art Fair.
Although not officially a 501(c)3, the Militia itself makes no money on the Fair. Whatever little we have leftover gets put into the next Fair. However, we are officially happy when the artists and others involved in our Fairs make money and local independent business gets a little boost.
The event seems to be growing in popularity. "We regularly get requests from people in the community and the greater region to learn more about the Shadow Art Fair," praises Albaum. "We feel honored that so many people continue to ask how they can be involved either as a vendor, as an entertainer, or as a volunteer."
Due to the increasing interest in the Shadow Art Fair, the organizers decided to make the event juried (by application) and added a poster design contest as a way to increase public involvement in branding each event.
